Full Circle Wellness, the holistic approach to Kinesiology, Nutrition & Fitness

Massage and the New Mom

by Claire, 2 years ago

Massage & wellness go hand-in-hand, which is why Full Circle Wellness is excited to share this exciting massage therapy product for new moms by Massage Mamma Mobile Massage Service!

When a new baby is born they bring with them joy, love & happiness but also an entirely new set of skills that mom (and dad) must learn to perform. Arms, backs, necks and shoulders must become accustomed to hours of feeding, carrying, rocking, changing and burping. Not to mention the poses we twist ourselves into in an effort to lull our new little beings into a restful sleep. Moms body is also undergoing a rapid transition from pregnancy to the body after birth. There are changes in body chemistry, body shape, and center of gravity.

So often new moms put so much focus on caring for the new baby that they forget to take care of themselves. As difficult as this may seem, it’s vitally important that moms also get some all important “me time”. Adjusting to all the changes, physical and  emotional, can be stressful and even overwhelming at times. It’s important to remember that taking care of yourself means that you are better equipped to take care of baby.

Appropriate nutrition and fluid intake are vital. This doesn’t mean hours in the kitchen but having quick and nutritious options at hand. Graciously accept offers to bring food from friends and relatives. Stock up the fridge with wholesome soups, casseroles, yogurts and lots of fresh fruit. And don’t stop taking your supplements!

Massage is a fantastic way to speed up the body’s recovery and nurture yourself both physically and emotionally.

The benefits of massage for new moms include:

  • Easing pain and tension in aching muscles. (Particularly neck, back and shoulders)
  • Reducing stress and promoting a feeling of well being.
  • Improving circulation to relieve postpartum swelling and water retention that many women suffer from.
  • Helps with the elimination of toxins from the body.
  • Relieves uncomfortable constipation.
  • Oils and massage promote healthy skin tone and reduction of scar tissue and stretch marks
  • Massage can lessen anxiety and depression

While making time for a massage may seem challenging with all the dirty washing, 2am feedings and million other duties of motherhood, it certainly possible and very worthwhile.

  • Get the therapist to come to you. You stay close to baby and still get me time.
  • Ask for help! Dad, mother-in-law or trusted friend can be enlisted to watch baby for an hour.
  • Pick your time. Make sure baby is fed & clean, they are less likely to fuss. If nap times are predictable, take advantage!

Being a mom myself I know first hand the which areas moms hold stress in. It really gives me a great feeling to combine my knowledge of massage with this experience to provide relaxing and reviving service for new moms.
