Thanks for this question Tam. Strengthening your core is one of the most important areas to focus on when commencing a training programme. When your core is strengthened, your tummy muscles are used to maintain your posture. When your core is weak, your tummy muscles are unable to maintain correct posture and the back/spine often has to compensate for this. This can lead to back and neck problems, as well as knee problems (when your core is tight and you are using your tummy instead of your back, you are taking additional pressure of your knee joints).
