Another fantastic post from our Guest Blogger, Part-Time Veggie! Check out her article on these awesome smoothies for HEALTH ON THE GO – “Carrot Cake Batter Smoothie”? YES PLEASE!

Health trends can be completely overwhelming. Every day there’s another blonde haired, 6 packed social media star simpering about how she juices for the first 4 days of the week and only eats celeriac and kale stir fries for the rest of it. Juicing? Kale? It took me 3 months to find my first bag of kale in Cape Town, and I don’t own a juicer (regrettably – it is something I’m working on). My point is, health suddenly seems like it’s a lot of effort. Your cheapest juicers are around R1000 and no one has time to go to 5 shops looking for unusual products.

That’s why smoothies are such a great place to start if you’re new to healthy eating. All you need is a blender. It can be a state of the art masterpiece from that Ken-doll Verimark man, or it could be the ancient machine you inherited from your Gran which makes more noise than a cement mixer. As long as it functions, your path to health starts right there.

Smoothies are quick to make and you can pretty much chuck in any healthy ingredients you have lying around. I make a smoothie every morning for breakfast (which I supplement with boiled eggs at 10am – don’t think I’m a low calorie health Barbie) and it pretty much follows the same formula.

Green Smoothie
½ cup oat milk (or milk of your choice)Smoothie1
½ cup water
Pinch each of cinnamon, ginger and turmeric
2 tbsp protein powder (if you don’t have any use a raw egg instead or leave it out)
2 tbsp chia seeds (can substitute with ground flaxseed or any other seed mix)
1 banana
1 apple/pear/chunk of papaya
2 big handfuls of spinach
Ice blocks

Sometimes I change it up – I add a small piece of raw beetroot or a tbsp of natural peanut butter. There are so many ways to jazz up a smoothie. Equally if you don’t have any of the mysterious powders and potions found in a health nut’s cupboard, you can simply make it out of fruit and green vegetables.

For a treat, I’ll make a smoothie that tastes that cake batter. It’s surprisingly easy to make these healthy concoctions taste like sinful sweets.

CarrotSmoothie2 Cake Batter Smoothie
2 large peeled carrots
4 tbsp natural yoghurt
1 tbsp chia seeds
2 tbsp protein powder (alternatively 1 raw egg)
1/4 pecan nuts
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp mixed spice
1 tsp cinnamon
1-2 tbsp raw honey

1 cup oat milk
Ice blocks
Top with more pecans and cinnamon

Being healthy doesn’t have to be hard. Find the path that works best with what you already have, and half the battle is won.
